"Blessing for Rain"

By (the late) Rex A. Begaye

Rex was inspired to paint "Blessing for Rain" after a trip home during a drought. It is said when there is lack of water that prayers can be performed at the sacred mountain to ask for the storms to come. Rex climbed to the top of the mountain and stayed overnight. Upon awakening he found the mountain peaks were white from the rains that had come and as he returned home to Grand Canyon, the storm clouds followed him, bringing rain with them.

Within the lightning you will see faces, symbolizing the spirits of the land. The singer, or medicine person, connects with the lightning, surrounded by Yei Mother Earth and Father Sky Yei. Above the sacred mountains the eagle wraps around the Earth symbolizing protection and healing.
